Bamboo Farm | Martijn Gielens

Haps, Netherlands
Martijn (52) and Marjan (48) Gielens from Haps stopped their dairy farm in 2022 and started looking for a sustainable, future-oriented crop. After visiting the bamboo info days (powered by BambooLogic) in Merksplas, they were convinced of the power of bamboo. With applications such as fibres, building materials, clothing, shoots and pet food, bamboo offers a wide range of possibilities. They strongly believe in nature-inclusive farming, where bamboo not only helps with soil restoration and biodiversity, but also aligns with increasingly stringent government regulations around climate and sustainability. The sale of carbon removal certificates enables local entrepreneurs to reduce their carbon footprint, while the Gielens generate additional income. Bamboo gives them a sustainable and profitable earning model.

What makes bamboo stand out compared to other crops?
Better soils
At nature's best, because of bamboo
Bamboo stops land degradation and makes soils healthy again. With 60-70% degraded soils in the European Union, we need to act now with efficient and sustainable solutions to maintain food security, biodiversity and climate stability.
Regenerative agriculture
Accelerating the transition we need
Growing bamboo fits within the current vision of nature-inclusive agriculture and carbon farming. The fast-growing grass is one of the fastest renewable raw materials, provides a highly versatile material and offers European farmers a sustainable green business model.
Supporting climate
backed by European regulations
Managed bamboo fields can store tens of tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year in the soil. Processed into long-life materials such as building materials, bamboo stores many tonnes of carbon in addition to soil storage. Up to 1.6 tonnes of CO2 can be stored per tonne of bamboo. Therefore, bamboo is recognised by Cop 21 in Paris and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Supercharging the biobased industry
with best care for environment and biodiversity
There is demand for bamboo from almost every sector; Construction materials, textiles, pharma, food, beauty & healtcare, furniture, etcetera.
Our farmers can be suppliers in a sustainable and profitable way as part of a green economy. Bamboo offers European farmers opportunities to build a green business model based on a rapidly renewable and versatile raw material.
