Mintjens

Malle, België

Carl Mintjens breathes sustainability in all aspects; as a farmer, with his furniture factory and as a dedicated resident of the town where he lives, Malle. He stresses the importance of local impact and building communities. Besides the positive impact of his bamboo fields on nature and climate, he is developing Belgium's most sustainable furniture factory. And bamboo fits perfectly into that picture. Carl's ambition is to use locally grown bamboo in his furniture production in Belgium. In doing so, he controls the end product from seed to wood product and guarantees local and sustainable production from A to Z.

Bamboo farming means more than
only removing carbon

Better Soils

At nature's best, because of bamboo

Bamboo stops land degradation and makes soils healthy again. With 60-70% degraded soils in the European Union, we need to act now with efficient and sustainable solutions to maintain food security, biodiversity and climate stability. Imagine this: bamboo leaves fall throughout the year and create a thick nutritious humus layer that enriches the soil, lowers soil temperature and retains water.

The extensive root system facilitates oxygen, water and carbon flow. Because bamboo is a pesticide-free crop and neither tillage nor clear-cutting is applied, the soil can recover and remain healthy; a solid foundation for a robust ecosystem.

Regenerative Agriculture

Accelerating the transition we need

Growing bamboo fits within the current vision of nature-inclusive agriculture and carbon farming. The fast-growing grass is one of the fastest renewable raw materials, provides a highly versatile material and offers European farmers a sustainable green business model.

With the rapidly increasing demand for European bio-based materials, the great potential for carbon storage and the positive impact on the planet and climate, growing bamboo is a wise choice for the European agricultural sector. Bamboo farming ensures a more biodiverse agriculture.

Supporting Climate

backed by European regulations

Cop 21 in Paris and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change recognised bamboo as a strategic tool to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. Managed bamboo fields can store tens of tonnes of CO2 per hectare per year in the soil. Processed into long-life materials such as building materials, bamboo stores many tonnes of carbon in addition to soil storage. Up to 1.6 tonnes of CO2 can be stored per tonne of bamboo.

Bamboo carbon sinks significantly reduce the negative impacts of greenhouse gases on the planet. With the Carbon Removal and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF), Europe is actively supporting farmers to remove carbon through nature-based solutions. Let us take responsibility and catalyse the establishment of managed bamboo carbon sinks.

Supercharging the Biobased Industry

with best care for environment and biodiversity

Bamboo is revolutionising European agriculture. It offers the agricultural sector opportunities to build a green business model based on a rapidly renewable and versatile raw material. There is demand for bamboo from almost every sector: construction materials, textiles, pharma, food, beauty & healtcare, furniture, flooring, composites industry, …

Farmers can be suppliers in a sustainable and profitable way as part of a green economy. The demand for locally grown bamboo in Europe is many times greater than the supply.

By replacing materials with a large footprint with the CO2-negative bamboo, a lot of emissions are avoided. Avoided CO2 emissions are also an important part of a climate solution.
